Worcester, Massachusetts – Wormtown Brewery’s Shrewsbury Street Taproom Undergoes Major Renovation

Wormtown Brewery, a staple in Worcester for over 16 years, is undergoing a major renovation of its Shrewsbury Street taproom, which has been closed since July 3, 2024, for construction. The brewery is set to expand its taproom from 5,500 square feet to approximately 10,000 square feet.

The Hendler Family Brewing Co., which acquired Wormtown in April 2024, is overseeing the renovation as part of a strategic move to enhance the brewery’s offerings. The closure of the taproom was anticipated, with construction focused on improving the existing layout and expanding dining options.

The expansion will introduce a larger, more restaurant-like space by taking down and rebuilding a brick wall behind the bar. The renovation aims to create a vibrant area featuring new design elements, including blue and white stained glass windows, a dedicated lounge known as ‘the Barrel Loft,’ and a second floor that will house foosball tables and possibly more games in the future.

While the Shrewsbury Street location is under construction, Wormtown’s Foxboro taproom has seen an uptick in business. The Foxboro site accommodates thousands of fans during Patriots home games, with special offerings like hot dogs, burgers, and bratwurst. The flagship beer, Be Hoppy, has remained popular among attendees.

Despite the changes at the Worcester location, Wormtown maintains its established beer lineup, with only minor adjustments made to packaging and release schedules. Some key members of the production team have relocated to Framingham following the sale, though the brewery’s production levels have remained steady.

The current construction on Shrewsbury Street is described as being “in heavy construction,” with updates on the reopening expected soon. Wormtown intends to incorporate distilling into its offerings at the new taproom, which will also collaborate with local restaurants for pop-up events.

As the brewery prepares for its grand reopening, it plans to commemorate its 11th birthday, integrating various entertaining experiences for visitors. The renovations reflect the growth of Wormtown Brewery and the evolving craft beer scene in Worcester.

Wormtown Brewery’s journey started in 2010 when the original taproom and brewery opened. Following its initial success, a larger taproom was introduced in 2020. With the recent acquisition by the Hendler family, the brewery is poised for further expansion and innovation in the local craft beer market.
