Waymo has opened a state-of-the-art autonomous vehicle factory in Mesa, Arizona, in collaboration with Magna International. The new facility, covering 239,000 square feet, aims to significantly boost production of autonomous ride-hailing vehicles, targeting tens of thousands of units annually. This factory marks a major milestone in Waymo’s growth and includes plans to incorporate new vehicle models, enhancing the existing fleet and expanding services to new cities. Arizona is positioning itself as a hub for innovation in the autonomous vehicle sector.
Mesa, Arizona — Waymo has officially inaugurated a new autonomous vehicle factory in Mesa, Arizona, in collaboration with Magna International. The significant facility, named the Waymo Driver Integration Plant, covers an impressive 239,000 square feet and is set to enhance the production capabilities of autonomous ride-hailing vehicles, aiming to produce “tens of thousands” of units each year.
The opening of the Waymo Driver Integration Plant comes on the heels of rapid growth in the company’s existing Waymo One ride-hailing service, which currently facilitates over 250,000 paid trips each week. Waymo operates approximately 1,500 vehicles in key urban areas, including Austin, Los Angeles, Phoenix, and the San Francisco Bay Area. Future plans also include extending the service to new cities such as Atlanta, Miami, and Washington, D.C.
This latest facility is designed to allow for the installation of autonomous vehicle hardware on various vehicle platforms on a larger scale. The new plant features an automated assembly line capable of enhancing production efficiency. This streamlining in manufacturing processes will facilitate the sub-assembly of Waymo Driver components and their integration into Jaguar I-PACE SUVs. After the assembly, vehicles undergo manual driving tests to validate their hardware and software before being deployed for public use.
Within a span of less than 30 minutes after leaving the factory, vehicles assigned to the Phoenix fleet can begin transporting passengers. Conversely, those destined for other cities can go into service within hours once they arrive at local depots. This rapid turnaround underscores the advances being made in production efficiency at the new facility.
Waymo has indicated that this facility will serve as “the epicenter of our future growth plans,” according to the company’s VP of operations. One key aspect of the plant’s purpose is to expand the existing fleet, which includes plans to incorporate Zeekr RT passenger vans from the Chinese electric vehicle brand Zeekr. These new vans will also be equipped with Waymo Driver technology at the Arizona site. The introduction of Zeekr RT vehicles is particularly notable given the ongoing monitoring of tariffs on imported vehicles.
Additionally, Waymo maintains an ongoing partnership with Toyota, focusing on the development of an autonomous vehicle platform suitable for integration into personally owned Toyota vehicles. The implications of this venture potentially broaden the market scope for autonomous driving technologies.
The establishment of the Waymo Driver Integration Plant reflects Arizona’s aspirations to evolve into a centralized hub for technology and innovation specifically within the autonomous vehicle sector. The state boasts favorable conditions for technological advancements and is actively encouraging growth in this critical industry.
This new factory not only represents a milestone for Waymo but also highlights the increasing importance of autonomous vehicle solutions in urban transportation. As the technology matures and production scales up, the implications for ride-hailing and urban mobility continue to expand, offering new prospects for consumers and the transportation landscape.
