Phoenix – Joel Goldenthal has officially stepped down from his position as the Executive Director of The Nash, a prominent jazz organization he co-founded. In this transition, Goldenthal will take on the role of sustainability specialist, where he will continue to support the organization’s future initiatives.
Goldenthal’s leadership has been a driving force behind The Nash’s growth and development over the past 25 years. His dedication played a significant role in fundraising efforts that have equipped the organization with the resources necessary to thrive. Notably, he secured a $1 million naming gift from the John Dawson Foundation, which facilitated the expansion of The Nash’s education center now known as the John Dawson Jazz Education Center. This state-of-the-art, 3,200-square-foot facility is designed to nurture aspiring jazz musicians, ensembles, and vocalists.
In his new capacity, Goldenthal will focus on developing and securing major gifts that will support The Nash’s ongoing programming and educational endeavors. He will also act as a spokesperson, leveraging his extensive institutional knowledge and offering programming consultation to enhance The Nash’s mission.
Steve Maun, President and CEO of The Nash, commended Goldenthal for his unwavering leadership and deep commitment to the organization over the years. His efforts and vision have positioned The Nash as a leading venue for jazz performances in downtown Phoenix.
Established in 2012, The Nash has rapidly become a premier location for jazz concerts, hosting upwards of 300 shows annually. The venue features performances from both local artists and internationally acclaimed musicians, marking its significance within the local and national jazz scene. The first concert was performed by renowned trumpeter Wynton Marsalis, highlighting the venue’s immediate importance to the culture of jazz.
In addition to its concert offerings, The Nash has expanded its educational programs significantly. It currently boasts 12 ensembles, including a big band and a summer camp led by a distinguished national faculty. This initiative underscores The Nash’s commitment to developing the next generation of jazz talent. Goldenthal’s new role emphasizes further growth in this area, aiming to secure resources to enhance these educational opportunities.
Goldenthal’s involvement with the jazz community dates back to 2000 when he was recruited to the board of Jazz in Arizona. There, he played a pivotal role in leading the organization through a transition from an all-volunteer model to one supported by paid staff. His experience and dedication have cultivated a vibrant community around jazz, allowing both performers and educators to thrive.
Beyond his administrative contributions, Goldenthal remains an active musician. He performs as a jazz pianist under the stage name Joel Robin at The Nash, sharing the stage with notable artists such as Francine Reed and Dennis Rowland. His dual role as an administrator and performer enriches the cultural fabric of The Nash, creating a dynamic connection between the venue’s operations and its artistic endeavors.
This strategic transition for Goldenthal sets a solid foundation for future advancements at The Nash, ensuring its status as a cornerstone of the jazz community while prioritizing sustainability and educational growth.
