The Tempe community mourns the loss of Fire Captain Scott Leatham, who passed away at 39 following a brave battle with NUT carcinoma. A dedicated public servant, Captain Leatham served with the Tempe Fire Medical Rescue Department since 2013 and impacted numerous lives through his commitment to public safety. His death leaves behind a grieving family and a community that admired his bravery. A funeral service is set for January 3, 2025, to honor his legacy.
In a heartbreaking turn of events, the city of Tempe lost one of its dedicated heroes, Fire Captain Scott Leatham, who passed away on December 19, 2024, at the tender age of 39. Scott leaves behind his beloved wife Ashley and their two children, Kaden, 15, and Kali, 12, who now face a future without their devoted husband and father.
Scott Leatham began his journey with the Tempe Fire Medical Rescue Department in February 2013, bringing his passion for helping others to the forefront. Over the years, he climbed the ranks to be promoted to the position of Captain Paramedic in February 2022. During his time in the fire department, he excelled in various roles, including serving as a technical rescue technician, a SWAT medic, and a proud member of the dive team.
Captain Leatham was widely recognized for his bravery and quick response during emergencies. He was the first fire truck captain on the scene at the Tempe Town Lake train derailment in July 2020, showcasing his unwavering commitment to public safety.
Scott’s journey took a tragic turn when he was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer known as NUT carcinoma. This fierce battle kept him and his family on a challenging path as he underwent intensive chemotherapy. Sadly, earlier symptoms including persistent headaches went overlooked, delaying his diagnosis. Despite his incredible strength, Scott lost his life to this aggressive illness.
News of Captain Leatham’s passing sent shockwaves throughout the community. He is the third member of the Tempe Fire Medical Rescue Department to die in the line of duty, following in the footsteps of fellow firefighters Ed Gaicki and Tommy Arriaga. His absence will be felt profoundly by his colleagues, friends, and the entire community, who admired and respected him for his dedication to service.
Interim Fire Chief Darrell Duty has spoken about Leatham’s dedication and exceptional leadership skills. He recognized how much Scott meant to the fire department and the lives he touched through his work. Equally, the city’s Mayor Corey Woods offered condolences, emphasizing that this loss resonates far beyond the fire department and truly impacts the entire community.
To honor the legacy of Captain Leatham, a funeral service will take place on January 3, 2025, at 10:30 AM, at Mission Community Church in Gilbert. The service promises to be an emotional tribute to a man who dedicated his life to serving others. An Honor Guard will be present to pay respects, and Scott will be laid to rest at the Valley of the Sun Mortuary and Cemetery.
Numerous first responders from across Maricopa County and beyond are expected to come together for the service, showing solidarity and support for the Leatham family during this incredibly difficult time. Community members are encouraged to join in celebrating the life of a dedicated public servant, whose legacy will live on in the hearts of those who knew him.
