News Summary

Skoden Coffee & Tea has made its vibrant debut in Phoenix, expanding from its roots in northeastern Arizona. Entrepreneur Natasha John brings Indigenous flavors and community wellness to her new space, enriching the city’s coffee culture. With an array of unique beverages and a commitment to tradition, Skoden fosters connections while empowering local artisans and women. This cultural hub promises to be a welcoming space for all, celebrating Indigenous heritage in the heart of Phoenix.

Phoenix Welcomes Skoden Coffee & Tea: A Flavorful Journey of Indigenous Heritage

Exciting news is brewing in the heart of Phoenix as local entrepreneur Natasha John expands her beloved coffee shop, Skoden Coffee & Tea. After a long and passionate journey, John has brought her unique blend of Indigenous culture, community wellness, and delicious beverages to a vibrant new location. Once a humble pop-up in Window Rock, the capital of the Navajo Nation, Skoden has become a cherished name in northeast Arizona, spreading its wings to the city this past December.

From Small Beginnings to Big Dreams

Initially a pop-up sensation, Skoden operated in various communities across northeastern Arizona, serving freshly brewed coffee and delightful pastries, all while promoting Indigenous ingredients. Although John was initially hesitant to relocate, support from her partner and colleagues encouraged her to take the plunge into the bustling streets of Phoenix. The original spot within For The People furniture store showcased a commitment to accessibility and community, setting the stage for Skoden’s growing popularity. But that was just the beginning—now, Skoden marks its territory at Central Records, a record store on Central Avenue just south of Roosevelt Street.

A Unique Coffee Culture

What makes Skoden stand out? Inspired by Japanese-style coffee shops called kissa, where patrons indulge in music while sipping their drinks, Skoden offers an enchanting atmosphere. Plus, their menu is a delectable journey through Indigenous flavors. From the Diné Matcha Latte that celebrates traditional practices to the delightful blue corn donuts, each item tells a story. The Honey Lavender Lez Love and Peach and Pecan Latte are also crowd favorites!

Rooted in Tradition and Community

John and co-owner Jo Manuelito have made it a point to evoke feelings of nostalgia by incorporating ingredients closely linked to their upbringing on the reservation. Items like Navajo tea highlight the cultural significance of herbal teas used for centuries in tribal medicine. With a keen focus on restoring traditional foods lost during colonization, such as sumac, Skoden emphasizes the importance of rare ingredients to nourish not only the body but also the spirit of the Navajo community.

Building Connections in the Community

As an Indigenous and LGBTQ+ business owner, John faces challenges, including external perceptions and the weight of expectations. However, Skoden aims to be a safe and welcoming space for everyone. The supportive environment has fostered connections with surrounding small businesses, helping to create a strong community fabric. A testament to Skoden’s reach, the shop has captured the hearts of over 15,000 followers on social media, showcasing the power of community and connection.

Empowering Women and Supporting Causes

Skoden is more than just a coffee shop; it actively engages with the community through fundraisers, local music festivals, and special events. One standout initiative includes “Auntie’s Kitchen,” where local Indigenous women can showcase their ancestral foods. By sourcing ingredients primarily from Navajo-made products and local vendors, Skoden strengthens its ties to Indigenous culture and collaborate with fellow artisans.

A Space for Everyone

Recognizing the needs of displaced Navajos living off the reservation, John is dedicated to creating a cultural hub that offers a sense of belonging in an urban setting. Skoden Coffee & Tea operates with an evolving mission—celebrating Indigenous heritage through food, beverages, and cultural reclamation. Visitors to Skoden can expect to leave feeling uplifted and supported, knowing they contributed to a space that fosters positive change in the community.

With its unique offerings, community-centered approach, and heartfelt commitment to Indigenous traditions, Skoden Coffee & Tea is not just serving coffee; it’s nurturing the bonds of culture and wellness in Phoenix. Visit them today and experience this vibrant fusion of flavors and heart!
