Major Freeway Closures in Scottsdale This Weekend

News Summary

Starting this weekend, major freeway closures will impact the northbound Loop 101 Pima Freeway in Scottsdale due to a widening project by ADOT. The closures will occur from 10 p.m. on Friday, May 2, to 5 a.m. on Monday, May 5. Detours and alternative routes will be necessary as various ramps and additional roads will face restrictions. Motorists are advised to prepare for delays and stay informed about changes to ensure a smooth travel experience during this busy weekend.

Scottsdale – Major freeway closures will affect the northbound Loop 101 Pima Freeway starting this weekend, as the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) conducts a widening project. The closure will stretch from Shea Boulevard to the Pima Road/Princess Drive exit, impacting motorists from 10 p.m. on Friday, May 2, until 5 a.m. on Monday, May 5.

During the closure, ramps from Via De Ventura and 90th Street to northbound Loop 101 will also be inaccessible. Drivers planning to exit at Shea Boulevard will need to use Scottsdale Road as a detour to reconnect with the freeway further north. An alternative route suggested by ADOT is the westbound Loop 202 Red Mountain Freeway to northbound State Route 51 (Piestewa Freeway), allowing access to Loop 101 in north Phoenix.

In addition to the closures on Loop 101, several other roads will face restrictions over the weekend. The westbound Interstate 10 will experience lane reductions, limited to four lanes from SR 143 to 32nd Street, due to pavement work related to the Broadway Curve Improvement Project. This reduction will be in effect from 10 p.m. Friday until 4 a.m. Monday.

As part of the Broadway Curve project, several ramps will close, starting as early as 8 p.m. on Friday. These closures include:

  • The southbound SR 143 ramp to westbound I-10.
  • Westbound I-10 off- and on-ramps at 40th Street.
  • The westbound off-ramp at 32nd Street.
  • The westbound on-ramp at Broadway Road.

Additionally, University Drive will be closed in both directions at SR 143 from 8 p.m. Friday to 4 a.m. Monday for necessary signal work, with detours provided for affected drivers. Further, the westbound Loop 202 Santan Freeway on-ramp at McQueen Road and off-ramp at Arizona Avenue will also be closed from 10 p.m. Friday to 3 p.m. Saturday for bridge work related to another widening initiative. Along with these closures, the right lane of westbound Loop 202 will be closed in Chandler from McQueen Road to Arizona Avenue.

ADOT strongly advises all drivers to allow for extra travel time and to prepare for alternate routes during the planned restrictions. These changes aim to enhance traffic flow and safety for all who travel through the Scottsdale area.

This current project, along with additional ongoing road work in the area, reflects continual efforts by state transportation officials to improve roadway infrastructure and manage traffic effectively. As Scottsdale and neighboring regions experience population growth, such construction initiatives become increasingly crucial for accommodating rising vehicle use.

Motorists should stay alert and remain informed about upcoming changes and closures through official ADOT communications to ensure a smooth driving experience during this busy weekend of road work.
