Scenic view of Phoenix during a weather transition from heat to cool temperatures.

News Summary

Phoenix recently experienced record-breaking heat, reaching 99 degrees. A cold front is expected to bring a much-needed cooldown to the region, with temperatures dropping to the low 80s by Monday. Gusty winds will accompany this weather shift, but any chance of rain remains minimal. While the cool weather is a welcome change, it may be short-lived as temperatures are predicted to rise again by mid-April.

Phoenix Weather Update: A Refreshing Cool Down Ahead!

Record Heat Hits the Valley

It’s been quite the *sizzler* of a week in Phoenix! Just last week, the city broke not one, but two daily heat records. On Monday, temperatures soared to a scorching 96 degrees, and just a day later, they climbed even higher to 99 degrees. It felt like summer had arrived early, and it certainly left many folks reaching for their fans and chilling drinks.

A Welcome Shift in Temperatures

But hold onto your sun hats because a *refreshing change* is on the way. A cold front is rolling in from the Pacific, promising to bring temperatures well below what we’ve been used to lately. The forecast for this coming Monday is expected to hover around the low 80s, which is right on point for this time of year!

As we stride through the week, peak temperatures will take quite the dip, potentially landing in the low 70s or even cooler by Friday! For those on the lookout for a day to bundle up and enjoy a warm cup of cocoa (or whatever your hot drink of choice is), Wednesday could very well be your day. Highs are projected to struggle and *maybe even* stay in the 60s across the Valley!

Gusty Winds Ahead

Not only will we see cooler temperatures, but we can also expect some *breezy conditions* to sweep through the area. Gusty winds are set to be prominent through midweek, especially on Tuesday. So, if you’re out and about, hold onto your hats! Wind gusts could reach between 20-35 mph in the Valley, and could even exceed 40 mph in parts of southeastern California, particularly in the western Imperial County. These winds are here due to that *refreshing* cold air mass heading our way.

After Wednesday, things will calm down a bit, but take note that while breezy conditions are expected to taper off later in the week, the chances for rain? Well, they’re looking very *meager*. Any precipitation that does show up will most likely stay north and east of Phoenix.

A Glimpse of the Past and Future

Looking back, it’s hard to believe Phoenix saw hovering temperatures in the 90s for four consecutive days just last week! But don’t get too comfy with this cooldown, as it seems to be a short-term gift. The *cool weather* isn’t expected to stick around for long, as forecasts reveal that by mid-April, we could be seeing a comeback of *above-normal temperatures*.

Typically, Phoenix doesn’t hit the big 100 degrees mark until May 11, but forecasters did think we could have hit that milestone earlier this week—landing just shy at 99 degrees instead!

This past year’s heatwave was particularly tough, leading to an eye-popping annual record of 70 days where temperatures reached or exceeded 110 degrees Fahrenheit. Sadly, that heat led to a total of 602 confirmed heat-related deaths in the city. However, public health officials are noting that this reflects the first decrease in heat deaths since 2014, a small but welcome silver lining.

What’s Next?

As we move closer to the weekend, we can expect overnight lows to approach the record-setting warmest low from 1989, which was 61 degrees. Overnight lows forecasted this Thursday could see temperatures lingering in the upper 60s. Highs are anticipated to stay in the low 90s on Wednesday and Thursday before finally dropping into the 80s by Friday.

And just a note for the wind lovers out there: strong winds will continue from Thursday through Saturday, peaking on Friday with gusts of 20-30 mph in the Valley and even fiercer in higher elevations.

So gear up, Phoenix! This week’s weather is all about that *refreshing change*, so enjoy the cooler air while it lasts, and don’t forget to embrace the sunny days ahead!
