Construction on Phoenix highways affecting traffic flow

News Summary

Metro Phoenix will face significant traffic restrictions this weekend due to construction projects initiated by the Arizona Department of Transportation. Key closures include the westbound Loop 202 Santan Freeway at Arizona Avenue, affecting on-ramps at Gilbert, Cooper, and McQueen roads. Detours will be made available for affected motorists. Additionally, US 60/Grand Avenue and Frank Lloyd Wright Boulevard will also see various lane reductions and closures for maintenance work. Drivers are encouraged to stay updated on traffic conditions to minimize delays during the construction period.

Metro Phoenix Weekend Traffic Restrictions Announced Due to Construction Projects

Metro Phoenix will experience significant traffic restrictions over the weekend of June 27-30, 2025, as the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) implements construction projects affecting several major roadways. Motorists are advised to plan accordingly and seek alternative routes to avoid delays.

The most notable closure will occur on the westbound Loop 202 Santan Freeway at Arizona Avenue (SR 87) in Chandler. This section of the freeway will be closed from 11:30 p.m. on Friday, June 27, until noon on Sunday, June 29, to facilitate necessary bridge work as part of an ongoing widening project. Motorists utilizing this route should be aware that the westbound on-ramps at Gilbert, Cooper, and McQueen roads will also be closed during this period.

For those traveling westbound, potential detours include using the off- and on-ramps at Arizona Avenue or exiting earlier via Germann or Pecos roads to reach Alma School Road, where they can reenter the freeway.

In addition to the Loop 202 closures, the construction will also affect traffic on two segments of US 60/Grand Avenue in the West Valley. In Peoria, the intersection of Grand Avenue and 75th Avenue will be fully closed from 9 p.m. on Friday to 9 a.m. on Saturday, June 28, to accommodate traffic-signal work. However, the Olive Avenue overpass will remain accessible to motorists during this time.

Meanwhile, in Surprise, the westbound roadway of Grand Avenue will be reduced to a single lane from Loop 303 to Deer Valley Road, starting Friday at 9 p.m. and extending until 9 a.m. on Sunday. This lane reduction is part of scheduled pavement improvement work aimed at enhancing roadway conditions.

Further east, Scottsdale will also see construction-related traffic limitations this weekend. Frank Lloyd Wright Boulevard will be narrowed to one lane in each direction between Hayden Road and 90th Street on Saturday, June 28, from 4 a.m. to 5 p.m. This work is part of a larger project to widen the boulevard and improve traffic flow.

Furthermore, Frank Lloyd Wright Boulevard will be fully closed in both directions at Loop 101 from 9 p.m. on Sunday, June 29, to 5 a.m. on Monday, June 30, as workers undertake crucial bridge construction tasks.

As the weekend approaches, drivers are encouraged to remain informed about traffic conditions. They can receive real-time traffic alerts by texting “TRAFFIC” to 620620 for updates directly to their phones. This proactive step can help minimize delays and ensure smoother travel throughout the Metro Phoenix area during the construction period.

These construction efforts are part of ongoing improvements to the region’s transportation infrastructure, aimed at enhancing road capacity and safety for the increasing volume of drivers in the area. As construction work can lead to unforeseen delays, understanding alternative routes and timing will be essential for all commuters this weekend.
