Phoenix, Arizona — Giovannie Dixon, an Arizona-based muralist, is making an impact on the local art scene by spreading joy and representation through his vibrant artwork. Known for his optimistic mindset and unique style, Dixon has recently embarked on a mission to complete murals featuring smiley faces, with four completed in the last two months alone.

Dixon, who has faced numerous challenges throughout his life, found solace and purpose in art after a turbulent upbringing. Growing up in Los Angeles, he dealt with the absence of an early father figure and raised by a single mother who immigrated from Jamaica. These early experiences would shape his outlook on life, leading him to cultivate a message of positivity through his art.

Transitioning from a hopeful career in professional football to the arts, Dixon moved to Phoenix in 2008 to play for Arizona State University. However, financial difficulties prompted him to transfer to Northern Arizona University, where he played football until dropping out. At the age of 27, struggling to find his true calling, he rediscovered his affinity for artistry and began creating art full-time, often living out of his car to support his passion.

In his artistic journey, Dixon gained recognition for his murals that address significant social issues, such as Black Lives Matter, and pay tribute to influential figures. His unique position as one of the few Black muralists in Phoenix led to an invitation from the Shining Light Foundation to paint a Black Lives Matter mural, allowing him to express his pride in his Black identity. He feels a renewed sense of purpose and identity since moving to Arizona, often referring to this transformation as a rebirth.

Throughout his career, Dixon has created at least 20 murals across metro Phoenix, each aiming to infuse joy and optimism into the community. He humorously describes this as marking his territory in the urban landscape. His notable works include portraits for the Phoenix Suns Ring of Honor and several murals that celebrate Black history and culture.

In addition to his extensive mural work, Dixon is committed to sharing his artistic skills with others. He had a year off in 2024 during which he participated in an arts residency program at Moontower apartments, utilizing the time to grow as an artist and mentor. He encourages aspiring artists to pursue their passions and find their unique artistic voices.

Art enthusiasts and community members have taken notice of Dixon’s contributions to the arts community in Phoenix. Kathi Williams from Onyx art gallery has expressed admiration for his talent and creativity, highlighting the positive ripple effect his work has on others.

For those interested in exploring his vibrant murals, Dixon maintains an interactive mural map available on his website, justcreatedit.com, which showcases various locations of his artwork throughout the city. Looking ahead, he is also considering exploring sculpture art as part of his evolving artistic journey.

Giovannie Dixon continues to inspire those around him through his commitment to joy, representation, and the power of artistic expression in addressing social issues. His journey from adversity to artistic fulfillment serves as a testament to the impact one individual can make through art.
