Residents of Phoenix benefit from newly established cooling stations as part of the Heat Response Plan.
As Phoenix faces a new wave of extreme heat, the city has activated a comprehensive Heat Response Plan aimed at protecting vulnerable populations such as the homeless and elderly. With over 200 hydration and cooling stations established across the area, the plan focuses on enhancing public safety in response to potentially hazardous temperature conditions. Key features include a 24/7 respite center and efforts from local organizations like The Salvation Army to offer mobile hydration units and community education on heat safety.
Phoenix, Arizona, is preparing for a new wave of triple-digit heat starting Wednesday, activating a comprehensive Heat Response Plan to enhance public safety in the face of extreme temperatures. The plan aims to protect vulnerable individuals, particularly the homeless and elderly, as the region braces for potentially hazardous heat conditions.
In 2024, Maricopa County reported 602 heat-related deaths, a decrease from the previous year’s total of 645. Despite this decline, the figures underscore the ongoing threat that extreme heat poses to the community, particularly during the sweltering summer months.
The centerpiece of Phoenix’s new Heat Response Plan is a 24/7 heat respite and navigation center located at 20th Avenue and Jackson Street in downtown Phoenix. This center is designed to provide overnight relief to the most affected individuals, offering cold water and support from case managers to help connect them to essential services.
To further mitigate the risks associated with extreme heat, more than 200 hydration and cooling stations have been established across the Valley, including locations in Buckeye, Mesa, Tempe, and Avondale. These stations provide cold water, shaded rest areas, and air-conditioned spaces, ensuring residents have access to necessary relief from the heat.
In addition to the established cooling stations, the Salvation Army has deployed mobile hydration units targeting areas with high-risk populations, increasing the outreach to those in need.
As temperatures are expected to soar, residents are strongly urged to stay hydrated, limit outdoor exposure during peak heat hours, and check in on vulnerable neighbors, especially seniors and those who may lack reliable air conditioning. Community awareness is a vital aspect of the ongoing efforts to prevent heat-related fatalities.
As part of the initiative, volunteer teams will also distribute water and educate hikers on heat safety at popular trails every Saturday from May 1 to September 30. Such outreach is critical, as last summer witnessed Phoenix experiencing 113 consecutive days at or above 100 degrees, with a shocking 70 days exceeding 110 degrees.
The demographic most affected by heat-related deaths in Maricopa County tends to be men aged 50-64. Most fatalities were reported on days deemed to have a “moderate” heat risk, indicating that even less severe heat conditions can pose significant risks. Alarmingly, among indoor heat-related deaths, 88% of victims had an air-conditioning unit in their home, yet 70% of those units were either not functioning or poorly maintained, demonstrating the crucial need for effective cooling solutions.
The city’s Heat Relief Network aims to prevent outdoor heat fatalities while ensuring community coordination among various city governments. This network includes an interactive map detailing the locations of cooling centers, hydration stations, collection sites, and respite centers, enabling residents to easily access these resources.
For additional support, live operators are available through 211 Arizona to assist residents in locating cooling centers and other critical services from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily. The ongoing operational status of the Heat Relief Network throughout the summer aims to provide essential resources and help for those most vulnerable to extreme heat.
