Construction on Phoenix freeways causing traffic delays this weekend.
This weekend, multiple freeway restrictions will affect north and northwest Phoenix due to construction projects. The Arizona Department of Transportation warns drivers of possible delays and closures starting Friday evening through Monday morning. Key closures include Loop 101 ramps and lane restrictions. Motorists should prepare for detours and plan extra travel time. Staying informed via ADOT’s updates is encouraged to navigate these disruptions safely.
Multiple freeway restrictions are scheduled in north and northwest Phoenix from the evening of Friday, June 20, until the morning of Monday, June 22, as work crews embark on various construction projects. The Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) has alerted drivers to these planned work zones, which could result in significant delays and temporary closures along key routes.
The eastbound and westbound ramps of Loop 101, also known as the Agua Fria Freeway, to both northbound and southbound I-17 will be subject to closures from 10 p.m. Friday, June 20, until 10 p.m. Saturday, June 21. These closures are part of an ongoing widening project aimed at enhancing traffic flow on Loop 101.
Motorists are strongly advised to allow extra travel time when navigating the area. As an alternative, drivers can exit Loop 101 before the affected ramps. Recommended detours include:
In addition to ramp closures, Loop 101 will be narrowed to two lanes in both directions between 71st Avenue and Union Hills Drive from 11 p.m. Friday, June 20, to 11 p.m. Saturday, June 21. Drivers are reminded to slow down and merge safely within the work zone, as they may experience delays during this period.
Frank Lloyd Wright Boulevard will also be closed in both directions at Loop 101 in Scottsdale from 9 p.m. Friday, June 20, until 8 a.m. Saturday, June 21. Detour routes along the Loop 101 frontage roads will guide drivers to turn at Raintree Drive or Bell Road to navigate around the closure.
Meanwhile, the southbound I-17 on-ramp at 19th Avenue will undergo barrier wall repairs, resulting in its closure from 9 p.m. Friday, June 20, to 2 p.m. Saturday, June 21. Additionally, the right lane of southbound I-17 near 19th Avenue will be closed during this timeframe. Drivers can detour using the southbound frontage road, which connects to Seventh Avenue before entering southbound I-17.
To help travelers navigate potential delays, ADOT provides updates on highway conditions through its official channels. To stay informed about traffic situations along major roadways, drivers can monitor ADOT’s X feed @ArizonaDOT.
For mobile users, the AZ511 app offers a handy version of the Arizona Traveler Information, providing essential traffic updates and route information. Travelers within Arizona can also dial 511 for traffic reports. For those unable to access 511 from a mobile device, the alternative numbers are 1-888-411-ROAD (7623) within the United States, or 1-520-200-0105 for international inquiries.
The Arizona Traveler Information site, located at az511.gov, allows drivers to map routes and check for road closures that may affect their travel times, ensuring they can plan their journeys more effectively amidst these weekend construction projects.
As the work begins, all drivers are urged to drive cautiously, obey posted detours, and be mindful of the construction zones for the safety of both workers and travelers alike.
