Chilled water fountain in a Phoenix park providing hydration to residents

News Summary

In response to record heat conditions, Phoenix is set to expand its chilled water fountain program, adding seven more units to the existing seven. This initiative aims to provide relief to residents as temperatures soar, allowing easy access to chilled hydration. The current fountains have already dispensed over 21,000 gallons of water, equating to 150,000 single-use plastic bottles. Funded by community support, the fountains will operate 24/7, demonstrating Phoenix’s commitment to public health and well-being amid extreme heat challenges.

Phoenix is expanding its chilled water fountain program in response to alarming heat conditions as record temperatures begin to spike in the valley. The initiative aims to provide relief for residents suffering from extreme heat, especially as Phoenix experiences some of the hottest weather seen this summer. Currently, there are seven operational chilled water fountains throughout the city, with plans to add seven more units in the coming months.

The existing fountains have already made a significant impact, dispensing over 21,000 gallons of chilled water, which is enough to fill an entire backyard swimming pool. This increase in usage aligns with a reported 45% rise in visitors compared to the last year, allowing the fountains to distribute an equivalent of 150,000 single-use plastic water bottles worth of hydration to the public.

These specialized fountains are equipped to withstand Phoenix’s severe heat, painted in bright blue for visibility and designed with heat-resistant materials. The water dispensed from the fountains is maintained at a comfortable temperature range of 65 to 75 degrees Fahrenheit. To ensure ongoing functionality, a team of volunteers, including local residents, is responsible for weekly maintenance tasks such as cleaning and monitoring the water temperature.

The expansion of the program is fueled by community support, with funds coming from the Gila River Indian Community and the Arizona Community Foundation. This initiative is a response to the increasing demand for public hydration solutions, as noted by officials from the City of Phoenix’s Innovation Office. The fountains will operate 24/7, allowing anyone in the community easy access to chilled water at any time.

Located strategically across the city, several of the fountains can be found in downtown Phoenix, while two are situated in Desert West Park. The program is intended to serve a diverse group of users, from dog walkers needing hydration for their pets to local wildlife including birds that benefit from the accessible water supply.

Fundamental improvements are being made to optimize the fountain’s performance. These enhancements include the integration of real-time tracking sensors capable of monitoring water temperature and pressure, which ensures the fountains are always functioning correctly. Additionally, ongoing surveys are being conducted to analyze user demographics and understand usage patterns further, allowing for tailored improvements in the future.

As extreme heat increasingly poses health risks to the community, the city is committed to mitigating these concerns through the availability of chilled water fountains. The goal is to ensure that residents have easy and constant access to hydration, which is essential for maintaining public health and safety during the sweltering summer months.

The expansion of the chilled water fountain program underscores Phoenix’s dedication to protecting its residents from the harsh effects of climate change while promoting accessible solutions that foster community well-being.
