Scottsdale, Arizona – The search for missing hiker Hannah Moody came to a tragic conclusion on May 22, 2025, when her body was discovered in the McDowell Sonoran Preserve, approximately 600 yards off-trail from the Gateway Trailhead. Moody, 31, was reported missing on the evening of May 21 by concerned friends who had not heard from her during her hike.
The initial search commenced shortly after her disappearance was reported. Scottsdale police found her vehicle parked at the preserve’s parking lot, which narrowed down the search area. Dark conditions led authorities to suspend their search shortly after 11:30 PM on May 21. However, the search resumed early the following day with over 20 officers, as well as the support of the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office search and rescue team, drones, and a helicopter from the Phoenix Police Department.
At approximately 12:05 PM on May 22, searchers located Moody’s body. An initial examination revealed no signs of foul play or trauma at the scene, but authorities are currently conducting a thorough investigation into her death. The official cause of death will be determined by the Maricopa County medical examiner’s office.
Friends and family believe that the extreme heat on the day of her hike, which reached nearly 102 degrees Fahrenheit, may have contributed to her passing. Moody was recognized as a seasoned hiker and had a solid following on social media, where she shared her outdoor adventures. Earlier that same day, she posted an Instagram video indicating her intention to hike, emphasizing that she had brought water along for safety.
The hike was intended as a “last hurrah” for Moody before the summer heat set in. Despite being an experienced hiker, her untimely death has raised concerns about the potential dangers posed by Arizona’s high temperatures to outdoor enthusiasts. The circumstances surrounding Moody’s death are particularly shocking to her loved ones, who have reported no prior medical conditions that could have played a role in her demise.
In remembrance of her life, family and friends are organizing a sunrise hike in her honor on May 31, which would have been her 32nd birthday. This tragic incident serves as a poignant reminder of the importance of taking precautions while hiking, especially during dangerously hot conditions.
The investigation into Hannah Moody’s death remains ongoing as authorities seek to gather all relevant information regarding this heartbreaking incident. As search efforts conclude, the community mourns the loss of an avid hiker and a beloved friend.
