Emergency services respond to the tragic shooting in Midtown Manhattan.
Midtown Manhattan, New York City, July 30, 2025
New York City faced its deadliest mass shooting since 2013, resulting in four deaths, including a police officer, during an attack inside a Midtown Manhattan office. The shooter, Shane Tamura, opened fire before taking his own life. Victims included prominent figures from various sectors, and community leaders are calling for action against gun violence following the attack. The incident has raised concerns about mental health and firearm regulations, and the investigation is ongoing.
Four people were killed in a mass shooting in Midtown Manhattan on Monday, marking one of the deadliest incidents of gun violence in New York City in recent years. The shooting occurred inside an office building located at 345 Park Avenue, a prominent location in the city’s financial district. Authorities report that the gunman, identified as 27-year-old Shane Tamura from Las Vegas, carried out the attack before taking his own life.
The shooting resulted in the deaths of four individuals, including a police officer and a Blackstone executive. The victims are as follows:
In addition to the four fatalities, a fifth individual, an NFL employee, was seriously injured during the attack. The victim’s condition was later reported as stable.
Shane Tamura previously worked as an overnight security guard at a casino in Las Vegas. He was scheduled to work on July 26 but failed to show up for his shift. Law enforcement officials report that Tamura had a history of mental health issues and acted alone during the attack.
It is believed that Tamura initially intended to target the NFL offices located within the same building but apparently took the wrong elevator, leading him to open fire inside the office area.
Authorities recovered an AR-15-style rifle, which Tamura assembled using parts acquired from an associate. He also legally purchased a revolver in Nevada shortly before the incident. Tamura’s possession of the firearm and the related materials are under investigation as authorities seek to understand his access and intent.
Inside Tamura’s belongings, law enforcement found a three-page suicide note. The note expressed grievances against the NFL and mentioned concerns related to chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), a degenerative brain disease associated with repeated head injuries, although there was no indication he played professional football. Tamura was a former high school football player.
City officials, including Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch and Mayor Eric Adams, issued statements condemning the violence and offering condolences to the victims’ families. In response to the tragedy, flags at city buildings were lowered to half-staff, and a vigil was held attended by local officials and community members to honor the victims.
The incident is considered the deadliest shooting in New York City since 2013, underscoring ongoing concerns about gun violence in urban environments. Mayor Adams and other officials have called for stricter gun laws, including a nationwide ban on assault weapons.
Law enforcement continues to investigate Tamura’s background, the purchase history of his firearms, and his motives behind the attack. Family and community members express grief and shock over the loss of the victims and the violence that led to such a tragedy.
The event has prompted renewed discussions on mental health support, gun control, and security measures in public and private spaces in the city.
