A burned car on the roadside as part of a crime investigation.

News Summary

The Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office has filed charges against two more suspects in the murder of Mercedes Vega, discovered in a burned car. Investigators have linked Jared Gray and Cudjoe Young to the crime through fingerprints and DNA evidence. The case highlights premeditated actions, with evidence suggesting cartel involvement and previous accusations against Young. As the investigation progresses, the community remains vigilant amidst concerns about potential additional suspects.

Tonopah, Arizona – The Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office has filed charges against two additional suspects in the murder of Mercedes Vega, whose body was found inside a burned Chevrolet Malibu on April 16, 2023. The latest suspects, Jared Gray and Cudjoe Young, have been linked to the case following a series of investigative breakthroughs that have raised significant concerns about their involvement.

Mercedes Vega, a 26-year-old resident of Tempe, Arizona, was discovered with visible signs of trauma, including gunshot wounds, blunt force trauma, and traces of smoke inhalation due to the fire. The vehicle containing her body was located alongside Interstate 10, which prompted a comprehensive investigation by authorities.

Further examination revealed additional clues that pointed to foul play. Investigators found bleach in Vega’s throat, with the implication of potential premeditation. Building a case against the suspects, law enforcement identified fingerprints belonging to Jared Gray on a cup inside the burned car. Additionally, OnStar data confirmed that the Malibu had been parked in Vega’s apartment garage on the day of her murder.

Surveillance footage played a pivotal role in establishing a timeline. The video showed both Vega’s car and a second Malibu departing from her apartment shortly after she had entered it. The investigation revealed biological evidence, as DNA found inside Vega’s car matched that of another suspect, Sencere Hayes, who was already in custody in Tennessee on charges linked to her murder. Should he be convicted, Hayes faces the possibility of the death penalty.

Additional insights from the investigation indicate that the Malibu was acquired through the online marketplace OfferUp. Cudjoe Young is believed to have coordinated the transportation of both Jared Gray and Sencere Hayes from Tennessee to Phoenix. This allegation is strengthened by cellphone records that trace their movements along the same route as the Malibu on the day Vega was killed.

The charges against Young include conspiracy to commit first-degree murder and conspiracy to commit kidnapping, while Jared Gray faces multiple charges, including first-degree murder, kidnapping, armed robbery, and theft. Compounding the severity of the case, Young has previously been identified by Vega in connection to an unrelated armed robbery investigation.

Mercedes Vega’s family has expressed grave concerns regarding her death, with her parents believing she was abducted from her apartment’s parking garage. They noted that she had aspirations of becoming a personal trainer and opening her own gym—a testament to her ambitious nature and plans for the future.

Eyewitness accounts have suggested Young’s involvement in the case further, indicating he solicited assistance in delivering a “package,” which authorities have connected to the murder. The presence of debris from a vehicle fire led to the discovery of Vega’s body, with investigators also locating her own vehicle abandoned nearby.

The investigation remains ongoing, with authorities exploring potential leads to identify additional suspects who may have been involved in the crime. The medical examiner has classified Vega’s death as a homicide, solidifying the pre-existing evidence against the current suspects.

This complex case highlights the relentless efforts of law enforcement to piece together the timeline of events and gather substantial evidence leading to these charges. As it progresses, the possibility of further arrests remains open, a situation that keeps the community on alert.
