Students enjoying after-school programs at La Conner School District.
La Conner, July 31, 2025
The La Conner School District will bring back its Braves’ Hub after-school program and Brave Beginnings preschool following the release of withheld federal funding. After a funding freeze resulted in the cancellation of these essential programs, the school community expressed relief as the funding will help restore critical services for students. Although the district is optimistic, it remains cautious about future budget uncertainties stemming from potential federal funding cuts.
The La Conner School District has announced significant changes following the recent release of federal funding, previously withheld. The district will reinstate its after-school program, Braves’ Hub, and the new Brave Beginnings preschool, which were set to be cancelled as a result of funding complications earlier this year.
The federal government had withheld funding from the district, leading to the cancellation of these essential programs on July 18, along with a reduction in services for migrant and multilingual students. Just a week later, the Trump administration confirmed that funds would be dispersed to school districts, ensuring the release of previously withheld financial support by the beginning of the 2025-26 school year. This announcement came as a welcome relief to the district’s administration and families who rely on these programs.
Superintendent Dave Cram and Director of Teaching and Learning Beth Clothier have expressed their gratitude for the restoration of funding, emphasizing the importance of the programs for the community. With the reinstatement, staff who were discharged due to the funding freeze will have the opportunity to return to their roles.
Despite the positive development, the district remains cautious about the long-term implications of federal funding. The funding situation beyond the 2025-26 school year is still in jeopardy due to the Trump administration’s proposed cuts to federal education grant programs for the 2026-27 fiscal year. The La Conner School District will closely monitor ongoing budget discussions and strive to keep the community informed about potential implications.
If additional federal aid is not secured, the district anticipates a loss of $652,057 for the upcoming school year, which will significantly impact its annual revenue of approximately $13 million. The loss signifies a real risk to essential educational services and programs.
Braves’ Hub, an after-school program, typically serves between 25 to 40 students daily. This program provides critical support and enrichment to students outside of regular school hours. In addition, the Brave Beginnings preschool was intended to boost kindergarten readiness for around 12 families eager to enroll in the program for its launch.
Moreover, the district has over 100 students eligible for migrant student services, and about 16 to 17 students benefit from English language acquisition grants. The reinstatement of the funding will help restore these vital services, aiding students who require additional support in their education.
Other local school districts that may face similar funding threats due to federal funding uncertainties include Mount Vernon School District, which risks losing $2.07 million, Bellingham Public Schools, which may lose $1 million, and Burlington-Edison, which could see a reduction of $662,765 in funding.
The La Conner School District is currently restructuring its staffing and programs to address the uncertainties regarding funding levels. This proactive approach aims to ensure that the essential services intended for students are maintained, despite the looming budgetary challenges.
