Salvation Army Opens Heat Relief Stations in Phoenix

News Summary

In response to extreme heat warnings, the Salvation Army is launching 10 heat relief stations across Phoenix. These stations aim to provide refuge from dangerous temperatures and will operate daily. Additionally, a mobile hydration unit will serve homeless populations. With collaborative efforts, the community is being encouraged to support vulnerable individuals during this critical period, emphasizing the importance of hydration and safety in the face of heat-related health issues.

Phoenix – In response to a prolonged Extreme Heat Warning issued by the National Weather Service, the Salvation Army is opening 10 heat relief stations throughout Phoenix. Starting from Sunday, June 29, these stations will remain operational until Tuesday, July 1, and will serve those in need during the extreme heat conditions affecting the region.

The heat relief stations will be accessible daily from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and will continue to function on any day the National Weather Service issues or extends an Extreme Heat Warning from May through September, including weekends. However, the stations will be closed on federal holidays such as July 4.

As part of their effort to combat the heat, the Salvation Army will deploy a mobile hydration unit each day to areas with a high population of homeless individuals. Since the start of May, the Salvation Army has already provided relief to approximately 16,500 people in Arizona, distributing more than 53,000 bottles of water in the process.

Lt. Colonel Charles Fowler, Commander of The Salvation Army Southwest Division, emphasizes the importance of community involvement, urging residents to check on their neighbors who may be vulnerable to dehydration or other heat-related health issues. On days of excessive heat, most relief stations also allow leashed dogs to accompany their owners.

Maricopa County has extended its heat relief services and will keep various heat relief sites open until September 30 for residents lacking access to cool indoor environments. Since these sites opened on May 1, they have recorded 5,700 visits. This effort reflects the urgency and significance of providing safe spaces during dangerous temperature spikes, especially as there were over 600 heat-related fatalities in the county last year.

In addition to visiting heat relief stations, residents can support the Salvation Army’s mission by making donations through their website or by texting HEAT to 51555. Those interested in volunteering can contact their local Salvation Army or call 602-267-4100 for more details.

Background context indicates that heat-related illnesses are a significant public health concern in Arizona during the summer months. The Salvation Army and county authorities are working collaboratively to provide essential services and promote community outreach, particularly during extreme weather conditions. The network of heat relief stations and hydration units serves as a critical resource to mitigate the dangers of extreme heat while fostering a supportive environment for those in need.
