News Summary
In response to overwhelming overcrowding, Maricopa County’s animal shelters will hold a free dog adoption event from August 2 to August 10. Nearly 900 dogs currently reside in the shelters, prompting this initiative to relieve the situation. The event will waive fees for dogs over six months and will see participation from shelters in Mesa, Phoenix, and Scottsdale. As lost and returned dogs climb, shelters emphasize the importance of matching pets with committed adopters. Educational efforts aim to reduce return rates and ensure a smooth transition for newly adopted dogs.
Phoenix – Maricopa County’s animal shelters will launch a free dog adoption event from Saturday, August 2, 2025, through Sunday, August 10, 2025, in response to an overwhelming number of dogs in their care. Currently, nearly 900 dogs are housed at Maricopa County Animal Care and Control, significantly exceeding their capacity and prompting the need for this initiative.
Communications officer Kim Powell stated that the shelters witnessed a significant increase in the number of lost dogs, with 88 arriving at the shelter in just one day last Friday. The surge in incoming dogs has overshadowed the number of successful adoptions, making the event crucial to alleviate overcrowding. The fees for adopting dogs aged six months or older will be waived during this event, enhancing the opportunities for potential pet owners.
All three Maricopa County animal shelters located in Mesa, Phoenix, and Scottsdale will participate in the free adoption event. The shelters will be open daily from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., providing ample opportunity for the community to consider adopting a furry companion. Additionally, adopters will receive swag from Tito’s Vodka For Dog People program while supplies last, adding a special touch to the adoption experience.
The rise in the number of lost dogs and the increasing number of returns is concerning for the shelters. In the previous week, around 30 dogs were returned to the shelters out of 280 adoptions, marking a return rate of roughly 10%. Common reasons for returns include incompatibility with existing pets and adjustments required for new canine family members. The shelters urge potential adopters to carefully assess their readiness for the long-term commitment that comes with dog ownership.
New pets often require time to adjust to their new environments. Experts recommend that dogs typically need approximately three days to decompress, three weeks to learn their new routines, and about three months to fully integrate into their new homes. With the current situation at an operational capacity accommodating around 700 dogs, which is slightly above the ideal capacity, the shelters are particularly keen on matching dogs with suitable, committed adopters.
Historically, around 8% of dogs adopted from Maricopa County shelters are returned each year due to various issues, including behavioral challenges and medical concerns. The shelters aim to reduce these return rates by educating potential adopters about the responsibilities of dog ownership and the adjustment periods both pets and families must navigate.
The “Aiming for a Shot at Love” event represents a concerted effort by Maricopa County Animal Care and Control to address the pressing issue of dog overcrowding while providing loving homes for animals in need. The shelters hope the community will respond positively to this urgent call for adoption and help give these dogs the forever homes they deserve.
