The Arizona Office of Economic Opportunity (OEO) successfully hosted the Arizona Workforce Summit 2025, bringing together over 400 business leaders, workforce development professionals, and experts on labor market dynamics. This significant two-day event took place on June 17 and 18, 2025, at the Mesa Convention Center, marking the summit as the largest of its kind to date.
In collaboration with Governor Hobbs’ Workforce Arizona Council and the Talent Ready AZ Initiative, the summit aimed to create pathways for economic opportunities accessible to all Arizonans. Governor Katie Hobbs addressed the audience, underlining the necessity of unifying government, industry, and education efforts to foster high-quality job creation in the state.
The summit provided a platform for participants to delve into pressing economic trends and formulate strategic plans to attract and retain talent within Arizona. Since April 2020, Arizona has achieved a significant job growth of 616,000 positions, showcasing a 23% increase. Projections indicate that the state is expected to add another 480,000 jobs by the year 2033.
Arizona’s population has also seen substantial growth, increasing by 460,000 residents, representing a 6% rise during the period from April 2020 to July 2024. This demographic shift positions Arizona as the 7th fastest-growing state in the United States. As of April 2025, Arizona’s unemployment rate is recorded at 4.1%, with a year-over-year workforce expansion rate of 1.4%. The state’s average per-capita personal income is approximately $64,400, which is about 89% of the national average, ranking Arizona 36th among other states.
The summit featured a variety of keynote presentations, expert panels, and interactive sessions designed to address the workforce demographics and industry talent requirements essential for sustaining economic growth. Among the notable speakers were demographers, chief officers from various organizations, and economic development strategists who discussed the insights gained from OEO’s economic data analysis.
One particularly important topic explored during the summit was the necessity of addressing the child care crisis in Arizona, which is implicated in economic losses amounting to approximately $1.77 billion annually. Employers are increasingly acknowledging how critical child care is to workforce stability and economic success, leading them to seek innovative solutions through public-private partnerships to enhance access.
The Arizona State Senate is currently reviewing a budget proposal for fiscal year 2026 that allocates substantial funds towards tackling child care challenges. Additionally, the summit generated actionable strategies for businesses seeking to address this issue through enhanced child care solutions.
A noteworthy initiative announced at the summit is the Employer-Based Child Care Design Lab, set to launch in Arizona, offering resources for businesses to cultivate tailored child care strategies. Applications for participation in the Child Care Design Lab are open until June 20, 2025, with informational webinars available to assist prospective applicants in navigating the process.
