Firefighters assess the damage in a wildfire-affected area of Arizona.
The recent wildfires in Arizona, particularly the Cody and Cedar Fires, have caused significant damage and raised alarms about fire safety. With human activity accounting for approximately 90% of wildfires, officials stress the importance of prevention measures and community awareness. The Department of Forestry and Fire Management is actively working to mitigate risks, and local communities are encouraged to participate in fire safety initiatives.
Oracle, AZ – Recent wildfires, notably the Cody Fire and Cedar Fire, have caused significant damage in Arizona, igniting concerns over fire safety and prevention measures. These fires have burned parts of the Arizona Trail near Campo Bonito, Oracle, and San Manuel, resulting in the destruction of five homes during the Cody Fire, which was the most severe spring fire, burning 1,223 acres.
Arizona’s wildfire scenario is alarming, with statistics indicating that approximately 90% of wildland fires are started by humans, according to fire officials. In 2024, there were 2,162 fires reported, burning over 280,000 acres. Out of these, over 1,400 fires were determined to be human-caused.
The Department of Forestry and Fire Management (DFFM) plays a crucial role in combating these fires, managing 22 million acres of state and private land with a workforce of 2,700 wildland firefighters and access to 3,000 pieces of firefighting equipment. Their efforts include conducting annual fuels reduction projects and fire safety programs, such as the Firewise USA initiative, to mitigate the risk of future wildfires.
The Cody Fire prompted evacuations affecting more than 1,000 residents in Oracle. It followed the Cedar Fire, which was linked to 67-year-old David Lindley, who has been charged with starting the fire while attempting to signal for help after running out of water. Together, recent wildfires have collectively scorched 3,406 acres and damaged at least 18 structures.
Firefighters prioritize homes they can effectively protect during major wildfires, emphasizing the importance of homeowners creating defensible spaces around their properties to enhance safety. The BHP crew has been active in creating and widening fire breaks around San Manuel to prevent fire spread.
Public safety officials remind the community that wildfires can occur year-round, underlining the importance of fire prevention measures. Careless behaviors, such as leaving campfires unattended or using tools that produce sparks, can lead to disastrous wildfires. In response to these ongoing risks, Arizona is currently under “stage 2” fire restrictions, which limit campfires and other fire-related activities.
Individuals who intend to spend time outdoors are advised to check weather conditions and prepare adequately, particularly when it comes to campfires or other outdoor activities. The establishment of the Pinal Emergency Notification System (PENS) aims to keep residents informed about emergencies, including potential wildfires.
The San Manuel Revitalization Coalition is actively collaborating with local fire districts to transform San Manuel into a Firewise Community. This initiative aims to enhance community preparedness and resilience against wildfires. Additionally, residents can access a comprehensive Living with Wildfire guide designed to assist in evaluating and improving their level of preparedness against wildfire threats.
With wildfire incidents on the rise, officials continue to advocate for community awareness and proactive measures to reduce fire risks. The recent fires in Arizona highlight the pressing need for effective fire prevention strategies and community education, emphasizing the role of every individual in safeguarding their homes and the surrounding ecosystem.
