Arizona State University Sun Devils battling against UCLA in the Los Angeles Regional tournament.
Arizona State University’s Sun Devil Baseball team suffered an 11-5 defeat against UCLA in the Los Angeles Regional tournament. The loss puts Arizona State on the brink of elimination, as they prepare for a crucial game against UC Irvine. Despite a strong showing from the bullpen, the team struggled to capitalize on scoring opportunities, leading to their downfall. Head Coach Willie Bloomquist emphasized the importance of execution as the Sun Devils seek to stay alive in the tournament.
Arizona State University’s Sun Devil Baseball team fell to UCLA 11-5 in the winner’s bracket of the Los Angeles Regional tournament on Saturday evening. The game took place at Jackie Robinson Stadium in Los Angeles, adding pressure as the team now faces elimination in the tournament.
UCLA demonstrated a strong offensive effort after having scored 19 runs in their opening round victory over Fresno State. In this matchup against Arizona State, the game began without scoring in the first inning. However, UCLA quickly shifted the momentum in their favor, scoring two runs in the second inning before recording an out. This was followed by a bases-loaded situation that resulted in a grand slam, contributing to a significant seven-run inning for UCLA.
Despite the early deficit, Arizona State displayed resilience by scoring in four different innings throughout the game. The Sun Devils’ bullpen, comprising Max Arlich, Will Koger, and Eli Buxton, was able to hold UCLA to just one run in the final six innings, showcasing their pitching strength during the latter part of the game. Arlich, who pitched 3.1 innings of relief, allowed one run on three hits while recording three strikeouts.
Offensively, Arizona State struggled to capitalize on scoring opportunities. The team ended the game with a disappointing 3-for-14 performance with runners on base and was particularly ineffective with a 1-for-10 showing when runners were in scoring position. Head Coach Willie Bloomquist pointed out the importance of taking advantage of these opportunities, which the team failed to do during this critical game.
The Sun Devils’ performance was hampered early on by starting pitcher Jack Martinez, who had a quick first inning but encountered difficulties in the second, leading to multiple runs allowed. During UCLA’s offensive surge, Arizona State also faced incidents like a “little league” home run and a bases-loaded walk, both contributing to the overwhelming score that reflected the strong performance from UCLA.
In a late-game rally, Arizona State did manage to score two runs in the ninth inning, but it was not enough to close the gap against UCLA’s commanding lead. Overall, Arizona State’s failure to convert opportunities into runs proved costly as they now face a crucial elimination game against UC Irvine on Sunday afternoon at 3 p.m. AZT.
The stakes have never been higher, as the winner of this game will advance to challenge UCLA later that evening at 7 p.m. AZT for a chance to secure a spot in the regional final. Arizona State must focus on execution and capitalize on scoring chances to remain in contention for the tournament and to avoid an early exit.
