In a record-breaking year for Arizona State Baseball, nine players were selected during the 2025 MLB Draft held on July 13th and 14th, making it a historic moment for the program. This achievement, which ties a school record for most picks in the first ten rounds, underscores the resurgence of the Sun Devils, who returned to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2021.
This season was significant for Arizona State, marking a milestone in the Willie Bloomquist coaching era. Under his guidance, the Sun Devils showcased the nation’s 29th-ranked offense in terms of runs scored and led the Big 12 with an impressive 12 All-Conference selections. Within these selections, ASU had four players honored with First Team and two with Second Team recognition.
The nine players drafted from ASU places the school in a tie with Arkansas for the most players selected through the first ten rounds and ranks them third nationally in total draft picks. Such an accomplishment echoes the legacy established by the 1981 College World Series championship team, which also had nine players selected in the draft’s early rounds.
The first Sun Devil off the board was Brandon Compton, chosen by the Miami Marlins with the 46th overall pick. Compton demonstrated elite power during his college career, showing some of the highest exit velocities recorded at the MLB Combine. His impressive stats include a .310 batting average, a .401 on-base percentage, and a .568 slugging percentage over two seasons with ASU.
Other notable selections include Ben Jacobs, who was picked by the Detroit Tigers in the third round (98th pick). Jacobs led the Big 12 in strikeouts at a remarkable rate of 13.49 strikeouts per nine innings while accruing 222 strikeouts over 150 innings with a 4.99 ERA during his tenure at ASU.
Lucas Kelly was selected by the Seattle Mariners with the 182nd pick after showcasing his skills with a fastball that reached 100 MPH. Isaiah Jackson gained attention after being picked 229th overall by the Los Angeles Angels, marking his significant improvements with a .310 batting average and 18 home runs during the season.
Jack Martinez was chosen 243rd by the Arizona Diamondbacks following a successful transfer from Louisiana-Lafayette. Kyle Walker, taken 246th overall by the Houston Astros, finished the season with a .352 batting average, contributing as a leadoff hitter for the team.
Additionally, Kien Vu was drafted 264th by the Cincinnati Reds, showcasing impressive speed with 21 stolen bases, even while contending with injuries. Will Koger and Matt King rounded out the selections, with Koger being picked 280th overall by the San Diego Padres, noted for his mid-90s fastball and closing capabilities, while King was selected 293rd by the Pittsburgh Pirates, leading the Big 12 with a .403 batting average.
With this recent draft, Arizona State’s overall total of MLB Draft picks has risen to 486, the highest in the history of collegiate programs. The Sun Devils have consistently been a powerhouse in baseball, producing a Top-10 round draft pick in all but four drafts since 1965. During Willie Bloomquist’s tenure, the program has witnessed 15 top-10 round selections and 27 overall picks, demonstrating a noteworthy impact on players at ASU.
Remarkably, several players in the latest draft class, including Compton and Vu, originally arrived at ASU as walk-on athletes, further highlighting the program’s ability to develop talent and achieve success. The nine players selected in the first ten rounds reinforce the bright future of Arizona State Baseball.
