Newspaper printing press in operation at the Arizona Republic

News Summary

The Arizona Republic will cease its printing operations in Phoenix and move to Las Vegas by October 2025. The decision is part of Gannett’s strategy for operational savings, impacting 117 employees at the Deer Valley facility. Along with the Arizona Republic, other local publications will also relocate printing operations. While a small team will remain to assist with the transition, all affected employees will receive severance packages. This marks a significant shift in Gannett’s operational strategy, emphasizing a commitment to quality journalism despite changes.

Phoenix, Arizona – The Arizona Republic, a significant publication in the region for nearly a century, is set to cease its printing operations in Phoenix, with the transition slated to take place by October 5, 2025. Gannett, the parent company of the Arizona Republic, announced on July 22, 2025, that the printing will be relocated to Las Vegas, resulting in the layoff of 117 employees at the Deer Valley facility.

The decision to move printing operations is part of Gannett’s strategy to achieve operational savings, which will be redirected towards enhancing journalism and maintaining quality local content. Alongside the Arizona Republic, the print operations for other publications, such as the Arizona Daily Star and Arizona Daily Sun, are also included in this transition to Las Vegas.

Following the closure, a small group of employees will remain at the Deer Valley facility to assist with equipment relocation and perform cleaning duties. All affected employees will receive severance packages as part of the company’s support during the transition period.

The Deer Valley printing facility has been a crucial part of the community since its opening in the 1940s, with the current structure coming into operation in the mid-1990s. It was sold for $38 million in 2023 but was leased back to Gannett for continued use until the recent decision to move. This move signifies a notable change in Gannett’s operational approach, following the company’s previous closure of the printing facility of the Detroit Free Press earlier in the year.

Additionally, Gannett will shift printing operations for three California publications to Riverside, California, as part of its wider operational restructuring. This operational change is expected to result in earlier deadlines for news copy and advertising due to logistical adjustments linked to the new printing arrangement.

Gannett’s overall operational footprint includes approximately 5.3 million square feet across various facilities and newsrooms, indicating a significant presence in the media landscape. The company has emphasized its commitment to maintaining delivery of quality content despite the operational shifts, aiming for continuous improvements in journalism while adapting to changing logistical needs.

As the Arizona Republic prepares for this transition, it marks an end to a long chapter in Phoenix while opening a new one in Las Vegas. Stakeholders in the community and the media industry will be watching closely to see how these changes impact the local news landscape moving forward.
