News Summary

Arizona Governor Katie Hobbs is urging residents to obtain a Real ID before the approaching May 7, 2025 deadline. The Real ID is essential for domestic flights and federal building access. During her visit to a motor vehicle office, Hobbs emphasized the importance of acting promptly as demand for Real IDs has surged. The TSA confirmed that the deadline will not be postponed, and individuals without a Real ID will face scrutiny at security checkpoints. Residents are encouraged to gather necessary documentation and apply as soon as possible to ensure smooth travel.

Arizona Governor Katie Hobbs is urging residents to obtain a Real ID before the approaching deadline of May 7, 2025. This identification will be essential for domestic flights and access to federal buildings. The urgency arises as the demand for Real IDs has increased substantially, compelling officials to remind the public of the upcoming requirement.

During a visit to a state motor vehicle division office in Phoenix on May 1, Governor Hobbs acquired her own Real ID. The governor emphasized the significance of the deadline, noting that it motivates individuals to take necessary actions. For those who do not wish to obtain a Real ID, other accepted forms of identification remain available, such as passports, which can be used for the same purposes.

Patricia Mancha, a spokesperson for Transportation Security Administration (TSA), reiterated that the deadline for complying with Real ID requirements will not be postponed any further. Starting May 7, individuals planning to travel must present a Real ID at security checkpoints to avoid heightened scrutiny and potential delays as TSA staff will have to verify identification for non-Real ID holders.

What is a Real ID?

The Real ID, also known as the Arizona Travel ID, features a distinguishing gold or black star located in the top right corner. The Real ID Act, enacted by Congress nearly two decades ago, establishes stricter standards for state-issued identifications, aimed at enhancing security within the United States.

Obtaining a Real ID

To apply for a Real ID in Arizona, residents must provide several documents: one proof of birth document, two proof of address documents, and their Social Security number. Acceptable proof of birth can include a birth certificate or U.S. passport, while proof of address may consist of items like utility bills or bank statements issued by a business or government agency.

Walk-ins at Motor Vehicle Division (MVD) offices in Arizona generally experience an average waiting time of around 15 minutes, with the option to schedule appointments online to minimize delays. The application process for a Real ID typically takes about two weeks, although it is advisable to allow three weeks for the credential to be delivered. The cost of obtaining a Real ID is $25, and it remains valid for eight years.

Data from recent applications indicates that approximately 75% of individuals obtaining identification through MVD offices have selected the Arizona Travel ID instead of a standard non-compliant credential.

Travel Considerations

Travelers should note that while a Real ID suffices for domestic flights, it does not replace the necessity of a passport for international travel. Furthermore, individuals already enrolled in TSA PreCheck should be aware that this program does not exempt them from obtaining a Real ID, although Global Entry may be used as a valid form of identification at TSA checkpoints.

As the cutoff date approaches, local leaders like Phoenix Mayor Kate Gallego are encouraging residents to procure their Real IDs swiftly. Those who miss the deadline will face increased scrutiny at airport security checkpoints, leading to potential delays, as TSA will strive to confirm their identities through alternative avenues.

Resources for Assistance

As the May 7 deadline approaches, it is crucial for Arizona residents to ensure their travel plans are not hindered by the lack of a proper identification method. Taking action now can help facilitate a smoother experience at airports and federal facilities across the nation.
