Arizona is actively addressing the safety of workers in extreme heat through the establishment of the Arizona Workplace Heat Safety Task Force. Arizona is taking proactive steps to ensure the safety of workers in extreme heat as the Arizona Workplace Heat Safety Task Force seeks feedback for recommendations aimed at protecting employees across various sectors. This initiative comes in response to rising summer temperatures and consecutive seasons of record-breaking heat.
The task force, which comprises members from the Arizona Chamber of Commerce & Industry and the Arizona Manufacturers Council, is gathering input from their respective associations to develop practical and economically viable recommendations that can be realistically implemented by employers. The focus is on creating measurable and data-driven tools rather than enforcing legal mandates. The overarching goal is to strike a balance between effective worker protections and the operational feasibility for businesses.
Under the directive of Governor Katie Hobbs, the task force was established through an executive order in light of the growing concerns over heat-related worker injuries. The initiative is also part of the Arizona Division of Occupational Safety and Health’s (ADOSH) 2023 State Emphasis Program, which was reported to have successfully led to a decrease in heat-related claims in the previous year.
The task force is composed of members representing a variety of crucial sectors, including agriculture, construction, health care, and logistics. Each member has been tasked with conducting outreach and gathering stakeholder feedback to inform the group’s recommendations. This collaborative approach aims to ensure that the perspectives of diverse industries are considered when formulating strategies to safeguard workers.
To develop recommendations that reflect the realities of the workplace, the task force will hold a series of meetings where employers and workers can provide feedback. This input will be invaluable in tailoring suggestions that are well rounded and incorporate the needs of both workers and businesses. The recommendations crafted from this feedback will be submitted to the ADOSH Advisory Committee by December 2025 and will subsequently be shared with the Industrial Commission of Arizona.
While other states have begun to implement heat safety initiatives, the Arizona task force is approaching the task with caution. Previous attempts in other regions have demonstrated the pitfalls of adopting a one-size-fits-all standard, often stemming from insufficient data and limited stakeholder engagement. Acknowledging these challenges, the Arizona task force is committed to developing well-researched recommendations grounded in the unique needs and conditions of Arizona’s workforce.
In addition to direct meetings with stakeholders, the task force encourages input from a wide range of voices across Arizona’s business landscape. Recommendations and feedback can be directed to task force representatives or submitted through the Chamber and Manufacturers Council, facilitating a comprehensive representation of the interests and experiences of different sectors within the state.
