Tucson City Council discusses Project Blue concerns amidst community opposition.

News Summary

In a unanimous vote, the Tucson City Council has decided to halt negotiations for Project Blue, a proposed data center that faced extensive community opposition and environmental concerns. The decision stems from fears over high utility demands and a growing distrust of corporate transparency linked to the project. While the data center promised significant economic benefits, the council chose to prioritize the sustainability and resource conservation favored by local residents.

Tucson, Arizona – The Tucson City Council has voted unanimously to halt negotiations regarding the controversial Project Blue, a proposed data center that sparked community opposition and raised significant environmental concerns. The decision, which was reached during a council meeting, effectively puts an end to plans for the development of the data center on 290 acres of Pima County land located near Houghton Road and I-10.

The project, proposed by Beale Infrastructure and reportedly linked to the tech giant Amazon, had received preliminary approval from the Pima County Board of Supervisors for the sale and rezoning of the land. However, the council’s recent vote reflects the growing resistance from community members who voiced their worries about the impact of the project on local resources.

Opponents of Project Blue filled the council chambers, expressing strong concerns primarily focused on the data center’s overwhelming demand for utilities, especially water and energy. Councilmember Kevin Dahl highlighted how the project posed significant problems due to its projected consumption of these vital resources. It was estimated that the data center would require more water than four golf courses combined, alongside an immense energy demand of 300 megawatts daily during its first phase.

Financially, Project Blue was anticipated to provide considerable economic benefits, including the generation of $250 million in tax revenue and the creation of approximately 3,000 temporary construction jobs, alongside 180 permanent positions with an average salary of $64,000. Despite these potential economic advantages, council members weighed these benefits against the community’s concerns.

In addition to resource consumption, councilmember Nikki Lee noted that the public expressed broader anxieties linked to a general distrust in government and corporations, as well as fears regarding technology and privacy issues associated with data storage. This sentiment has only intensified with the negotiations being shrouded in secrecy, primarily due to a non-disclosure agreement that restricted transparency regarding Project Blue’s details.

Beale Infrastructure representatives characterized the council’s vote as a “missed opportunity” for the local economy, arguing that data centers are crucial for the development of modern economies and technological infrastructures. They emphasized the importance of such facilities in fostering digital growth, despite the environmental concerns raised by community opposition.

The council’s decision comes amid a backdrop of increasing scrutiny over the management of essential resources in the Tucson area. Mayor and city officials underscored the need for a more comprehensive understanding of the water and energy requirements for such expansive projects. However, as of now, clear information regarding the data center’s cooling system and precise resource demands remains elusive.

The reaction from the public during the council meeting was palpable, with attendees who opposed the project responding with cheers and applause following the decision. This reflects a strong community desire to prioritize sustainability and resource conservation over economic development that poses environmental risks.

As the future of Project Blue hangs in the balance, it remains uncertain if Beale Infrastructure will consider pursuing the data center project on alternative sites outside the city limits. Without a clear plan for addressing the significant resource demands and community concerns, the viability of Project Blue is now in question as residents continue to advocate for sustainable development practices in Tucson.
