View of the Papago battery storage facility in Arizona

News Summary

Recurrent Energy has launched the 1200 MWh Papago storage facility in Arizona, now operational and supplying energy to Arizona Public Service. This project is key to enhancing energy resilience during peak demand and is part of a larger initiative expected to provide a total of 1800 MWh capacity. The facility will benefit around 72,000 homes and contribute positively to local economies and services.

Arizona Launches New Battery Storage Facility to Strengthen Energy Supply

Recurrent Energy, a subsidiary of Canadian Solar Inc., has officially launched its 1200 MWh Papago storage facility located in Maricopa County, Arizona. The facility has reached commercial operation and is now supplying stored energy to Arizona Public Service (APS), the state’s largest electric utility.

This project marks the first of three planned energy initiatives by Recurrent Energy in collaboration with APS. Once fully operational, these three projects are expected to provide a combined 1800 MWh of battery storage capacity and 150 MWac of solar generation. Collectively, they will enhance the energy resilience of Arizona, particularly during peak summer demand.

The completed Papago facility is poised to cater to approximately 72,000 homes for a duration of four hours, with the solar capacity alone capable of servicing around 24,000 homes annually. This capacity aims to address the growing energy demands in the region, particularly during the hotter months when electricity consumption typically surges.

Project Benefits and Community Contributions

The Oklahoma Corporation Commission Chair acknowledged this facility as one of the largest battery storage efforts in Arizona, reinforcing the state’s capability to respond effectively to rising energy needs. Furthermore, the Arizona House Majority Leader highlighted the project’s significance not only in bolstering energy infrastructure but also in fostering economic growth within the state.

In addition to its operational benefits, the Papago project is designed to contribute to local communities through increased tax revenues and support for essential local services. Under the Community and Renewable Energy (CaRE) Program, Recurrent Energy has made strides in supporting local entities, including donations to the Harquahala Fire District and Arlington Elementary School in Maricopa County.

Technical Aspects and Future Plans

Recurrent Energy’s subsidiaries, including e-STORAGE, have played key roles in the development of the Papago storage project, providing comprehensive engineering, procurement, and construction services. This maximizes the efficiency and functionality of the storage facility, contributing to Arizona’s long-term energy strategy.

Ismael Guerrero, the CEO of Recurrent Energy, noted the strategic importance of commissioning the Papago storage facility. The successful launch represents a significant milestone in the enhancement of Arizona’s energy infrastructure, aligning with the company’s broader commitment to creating lasting value for both local communities and energy needs.

The Papago storage facility is not only a representative of advanced energy solutions but also an integral part of Arizona’s efforts in expanding its renewable energy portfolio and ensuring stability in the electric grid. As demand for electricity continues to increase, projects like this are vital for future-proofing Arizona’s energy landscape and supporting the state’s economic growth.

Recurrent Energy’s collaboration with APS is expected to redefine energy storage prospects in Arizona, paving the way for additional green energy projects in the future. Together, these initiatives will further solidify Arizona’s position as a leader in renewable energy and fortify its capacity to efficiently manage energy resources for its residents.
