Police investigators at the scene of a burned vehicle on the highway linked to a murder case.

News Summary

Authorities in Maricopa County have identified three suspects linked to the murder of 26-year-old Mercedes Vega, whose body was found in a burned vehicle. The suspects include Sencere Hayes, Jared Gray, and Cudjoe Young, as investigation details reveal a pattern of criminal behavior and evidence suggesting foul play. The case has raised community concerns over violent crime and safety.

Arizona – Authorities in Maricopa County have revealed that two additional men from Chattanooga may face charges linked to the murder of Mercedes Vega, raising the total number of suspects to three. Mercedes Vega, a 26-year-old woman from Arizona, was tragically found deceased in a burned Chevrolet Malibu along Interstate 10 near Tonopah on April 16, 2023, following her reported abduction earlier that same day.

The investigation into Vega’s death has uncovered striking evidence suggesting foul play. According to the medical examiner’s report, Vega had suffered a gunshot wound, had bleach present in her throat, and succumbed to smoke inhalation. The incident has sparked significant public interest and concern, leading to intensified scrutiny of the suspects involved.

The first of the suspects, Sencere Hayes, was apprehended in Chattanooga on November 11, 2024, after he voluntarily turned himself in to law enforcement. Following Vega’s murder, Hayes has been linked to several arrests in Hamilton County, indicating a broader pattern of criminal behavior.

Recently, another suspect in the case, Jared Gray, 25 years old, has been taken into custody in Georgia. Both Hayes and Gray are currently facing first-degree murder charges, although these charges have not been formally filed as of the latest updates. Additionally, Hayes is confronting further charges of kidnapping, armed robbery, and car theft, underscoring the severity of the allegations against him.

Cudjoe Young, the third suspect, is suspected of arranging airline tickets for both Hayes and Gray. Court documents state that Young had previously been recognized by Vega as a suspect in a prior armed robbery incident. His role in this latest crime has drawn attention from investigators, leading to the pursuit of conspiracy to commit first-degree murder charges against him.

Extensive evidence has emerged outlining the events of the day surrounding Vega’s murder. Investigators have discovered fingerprints belonging to Jared Gray on a cup located inside the burned Malibu. Moreover, digital evidence, including data from the vehicle’s OnStar system, links both the Malibu and Vega’s car to her apartment garage on the day of the incident. Surveillance footage corroborates these findings, depicting both vehicles traveling in the same vicinity.

Prior to heading west on Interstate 10, OnStar data indicated that both vehicles had made a stop at a nearby restaurant, where Vega’s car was ultimately abandoned. DNA evidence recovered from Vega’s vehicle matched that of Sencere Hayes, who could face the death penalty if convicted of the murder. This possibility illustrates the gravity of the situation and the legal ramifications tied to these charges.

Detectives have also determined that the burned Malibu was acquired through OfferUp, and it was revealed that Cudjoe Young had compensated individuals for retrieving the vehicle. Cellphone records further demonstrated that Hayes and Gray took the same route as the Malibu on the day of the murder, strengthening the case against them.

As the investigation continues, the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office remains focused on pursuing conspiracy charges against Young and furthering first-degree murder charges against Gray. In May, the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office filed a Notice of Intent to seek the death penalty against Hayes, emphasizing the state’s position on the severity of the crime.

This series of events has raised concerns in the community regarding violent crime and the safety measures in place to protect residents. The ongoing investigation highlights the complex nature of criminal cases involving multiple suspects and the importance of gathering comprehensive evidence to secure a conviction in the pursuit of justice for Mercedes Vega.
