Fireworks lighting up the sky during Fourth of July celebrations in Phoenix

News Summary

Phoenix is launching a new task force aimed at combating illegal fireworks ahead of the Fourth of July celebrations. This initiative, formed by the police and fire departments, targets fire hazards and enforces laws surrounding firework use and sales. The task force follows a significant rise in fire-related incidents, with a 700% increase last year. Inspections of fireworks vendors will be enhanced, and the public is encouraged to report illegal use as the city seeks to ensure a safe holiday.

Phoenix Cracks Down on Illegal Fireworks Ahead of Fourth of July with New Task Force

The city of Phoenix is ramping up efforts to combat illegal fireworks ahead of the upcoming Fourth of July celebrations by launching a new joint task force. This initiative, formed by the city’s police and fire departments, aims to raise awareness about the fire hazards associated with fireworks and to enforce the laws governing their sale and use.

In 2023, Phoenix experienced a strikingly high volume of fire-related calls on July 4, seeing a more than 700% increase compared to non-holiday averages, prompting the creation of this dedicated task force. The rise in incidents has been linked to the improper handling and disposal of fireworks, which can lead to significant property damage and personal injury.

Last year, a media outreach campaign aimed at educating the public about the dangers of fireworks resulted in a 37% reduction in fireworks-related fires year-over-year. Building on this success, the current task force plans to enhance awareness as well as enforcement this year. Inspections of sales locations will no longer be limited to instances of complaints; instead, the task force intends to assess every vendor selling fireworks to confiscate any illegal products they may find.

As part of this crackdown, approximately 200 stores have already been inspected for compliance with firework sales regulations. Legal fireworks sales in Phoenix commenced on June 27 and will continue through July 6, allowing residents to celebrate the holiday safely.

Legal Fireworks Regulations

It is important for residents to recognize that in Arizona, only specific types of fireworks are allowed for public use. Legal options include ground spinners, sparklers, and snakes. Illegal fireworks, on the other hand, encompass items that shoot into the air or create loud explosions, such as bottle rockets, roman candles, and firecrackers.

The Fourth of July is statistically the day with the highest number of reports of lost pets due to the loud noises generated by fireworks. Residents are advised to take precautions for their pets during this festive time as loud sounds can cause anxiety and lead to pets escaping their homes.

Fire Safety Precautions and Penalties

The city encourages responsible disposal of fireworks by recommending that used fireworks be soaked in water for at least 24 hours before being thrown away to minimize fire risks. Each police precinct in Phoenix will have designated enforcement units specifically tasked with responding to firework-related calls throughout the holiday weekend.

Fines for the use and possession of illegal fireworks can reach as high as $1,000, in addition to any costs associated with potential property damage or personal injury resulting from improper firework use. The city of Phoenix is also hosting public fireworks events on July 3 and July 4, providing residents with safe and legal alternatives to celebrate the holiday.

Community Support and Reporting

To address the ongoing issue of illegal fireworks, the Phoenix Police Department has established a non-emergency contact number, 602-262-6151, for the public to report illegal firework use. By raising awareness and promoting community involvement, the city hopes to maintain safety during the holiday festivities.

Recent demonstrations from the Phoenix Fire Department have illustrated how quickly a house fire can ignite from improperly disposed fireworks, underscoring the importance of following safety procedures and regulations.

Through these combined efforts of public education and systematic enforcement, Phoenix aims to ensure a safer and more enjoyable Fourth of July for all residents.
