News Summary

The Phoenix area experienced a weekend filled with alarming incidents including a fatal pedestrian crash, a police shooting, and a bird flu outbreak in local farms. Heightened public safety concerns arose as authorities tackled these significant events occurring over the weekend. With ongoing investigations and health alerts, residents remain vigilant amid uncertainty in their community.

Phoenix, Arizona – The Valley faced a tumultuous weekend marked by a series of alarming incidents, including a deadly pedestrian crash, a police shooting, a bird flu outbreak affecting local farms, and more. The events unfolded over June 3rd and 4th, 2025, leaving residents concerned as law enforcement and health officials tackle these multiple challenges.

In the early hours of Tuesday, a fatal crash occurred on I-10 near Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport. The Arizona Department of Public Safety (DPS) reported that a pedestrian was struck by multiple vehicles, and while details are still emerging, the victim has not yet been publicly identified. This incident adds to a troubling weekend of road-related tragedies.

Earlier on Monday, a shooting incident left Officer Gabriel Facio of the Apache Junction Police Department critically injured. The altercation took place near the intersection of Ironwood Drive and Elliot Road when the suspect, 37-year-old Roger Nunez, opened fire on officers, hitting Officer Facio in the face. Reports indicate that Nunez engaged with law enforcement while armed, claiming he wanted police to shoot him. After the incident, Nunez was hospitalized, and investigations are ongoing.

In the realm of public health, the spread of bird flu has become a significant concern for local agriculture. Hickman’s Egg Ranch, Arizona’s largest egg producer, confirmed that a third farm in Maricopa County has tested positive for the virus. The outbreak has resulted in a devastating loss of 95% of the farm’s chickens, leaving only one uninfected farm remaining in the state. Officials are urging vigilance among farmers and consumers amid this escalating situation that threatens local poultry supplies.

Another urgent situation arose in Florida where authorities successfully rescued a woman who had left a handwritten note in a Jersey Mike’s sandwich shop, pleading for help. The note contained her location, leading to a swift response from law enforcement, showcasing the effectiveness of community awareness and vigilance.

Additionally, the Valley is actively searching for Travis Decker, a 32-year-old man wanted on three counts of first-degree murder and first-degree kidnapping. Authorities have urged residents to remain alert and report any sightings of Decker as the manhunt intensifies.

The Valley’s roads have also seen heightened dangers, with reports of a wrong-way crash occurring on I-17 in Phoenix around 3:20 a.m. on Tuesday morning. This crash involved a truck and a sedan; however, casualty details were not available at the time. Separately, a death investigation is underway near Jefferson Street on I-10 where a deceased individual appeared to have been struck by multiple vehicles, further contributing to a somber atmosphere on the roads.

Weather conditions in the region added to the mix of events. Scattered showers and thunderstorms were reported across Arizona, dampening the mood but expected to clear by midday. Residents can anticipate temperatures rising to the mid to upper 90s after the rain subsides.

As the community processes these events, local authorities remain focused on ensuring public safety and addressing the challenges posed by each incident. Ongoing investigations, health advisories, and traffic safety reminders are paramount in a time of both concern and urgency.
