Pima, Arizona – A 9-year-old boy was critically injured following a minibike accident on Sunday evening. The child suffered a skull fracture and was subsequently flown to a hospital in Phoenix for emergency treatment.

Authorities were notified of the accident at approximately 6:33 p.m., when the driver who struck the boy called 911. The incident took place as the driver was traveling westbound on 700 South, just west of 400 West, at the posted speed limit of 25 mph.

According to reports, the boy reportedly exited his driveway on the minibike and entered the path of the oncoming vehicle, resulting in the collision. At the time of the accident, the child was not wearing a helmet, which may have contributed to the severity of his injuries.

Immediate Response

The impact caused significant head trauma. The driver of the vehicle immediately stopped, attempting to provide first aid to the injured boy. The child’s parents, along with other bystanders, also rushed to assist until emergency personnel arrived at the scene.

Paramedics transported the boy to Mount Graham Regional Medical Center for initial care before he was airlifted to a specialized facility in Phoenix for further evaluation and treatment of his injuries.

Investigation Findings

Following an investigation into the incident, Pima Police Chief Diane Cauthen confirmed that the driver was not at fault. No citations were issued in relation to the accident. This decision underscores the determination that the driver was complying with traffic laws when the accident occurred.

Minibikes in Context

Minibikes are small, one-passenger, two-wheeled motorized vehicles primarily designed for off-road use. They became popular in the 1960s and 1970s, often regarded as suitable vehicles for beginners due to their smaller size and lighter weight compared to standard motorcycles. However, safety measures such as wearing a helmet are crucial when operating these vehicles.

This incident highlights the potential dangers associated with minibikes and the importance of safety precautions for young riders. Parents and guardians are encouraged to ensure that children wear appropriate safety gear, including helmets, when operating any motorized vehicle.

The local community is now focused on the well-being of the child, wishing for a swift recovery, while also reflecting on the risks associated with recreational vehicles.
