News Summary

Arizona has introduced the Future48 Workforce Accelerator, a dedicated initiative focused on aerospace and defense industry training. Spearheaded by Governor Katie Hobbs, the program will be based at Chandler-Gilbert Community College and aims to equip students with essential skills for in-demand careers in the sector. With a $6 million investment from the Arizona Commerce Authority, the accelerator plans to address shortages of skilled workers while promoting economic growth in the aerospace industry.

Arizona has announced the launch of a new aerospace and defense-focused initiative called the Future48 Workforce Accelerator. The program, spearheaded by Governor Katie Hobbs, will be located at Chandler-Gilbert Community College (CGCC) in Mesa and is expected to officially open its doors in the fall of 2026. Over $6 million will be invested by the Arizona Commerce Authority to facilitate hands-on training aimed at preparing students for in-demand careers within the aerospace and defense manufacturing sectors.

The Future48 Workforce Accelerator is a collaborative effort involving several key organizations: the Arizona Commerce Authority, Maricopa County Community College District (MCCCD), CGCC, and major industry partners such as Boeing and Honeywell. This program is intended to address the growing needs for skilled aviation mechanics and technicians, essential to sustaining Arizona’s robust aerospace and defense industries.

The state of Arizona is home to over 1,200 aerospace and defense companies, contributing nearly $15 billion annually to the local economy. This thriving sector employs more than 62,000 Arizonans and has established Arizona as one of the top five states for aerospace and defense employment in the United States. The Future48 Workforce Accelerator combines expert-led instruction and practical training, showcasing cutting-edge labs equipped with industry-standard technology that cater to various learning methodologies such as mechanical and electrical assembly.

The initiative is part of a broader investment of $30 million from the Arizona Commerce Authority to develop multiple advanced manufacturing training facilities statewide. Previous Future48 accelerators have established programs focused on semiconductors and batteries in partnership with GateWay Community College and Central Arizona College.

Partnerships with industry leaders like Boeing and Honeywell are crucial, as these organizations have underscored the importance of community collaboration to attract and prepare the talent necessary to meet industry demands. The training initiative aims to connect Arizonans with stable, family-sustaining jobs of the future while simultaneously driving innovation within the high-demand aerospace and defense manufacturing industry.

Industry Growth and Economic Impact

In recent years, Arizona has attracted more than 60 expansions in the aerospace and defense sector, representing over $2.8 billion in investments and creating more than 12,500 new jobs. The state’s reputation for leadership in guided missile and space vehicle manufacturing is solidified by its rank as number one in these sectors across the nation. This growth is bolstered by Arizona’s significant military presence, which includes several major military installations that support the aerospace and defense industry.

Future Opportunities

The Future48 Workforce Accelerator is designed to empower individuals and foster local economic development by equipping students with the skills necessary for exciting careers in technology and manufacturing. The investment in this program is not merely about filling current job openings; it is a calculated move aimed at securing Arizona’s position as a leader in the aerospace and defense sectors for years to come. With a commitment to adapting training to meet evolving industry standards, the Future48 initiative stands as a critical step toward sustaining job growth and maintaining Arizona’s competitive edge in aerospace and defense manufacturing.
