Murphy was the second of five children, with three sisters and one brother. She attended Alhambra High School, where she actively participated in chorus and theater, showcasing her vibrant personality. She graduated from Alhambra High School in 1968.

After high school, Murphy pursued higher education at Arizona State University, earning a Bachelor of Science in nursing in 1973. She began her professional career as a registered nurse at St. Luke’s Hospital and later worked at Phoenix General Hospital. Her dedication led her to the position of charge nurse on a surgical floor, where she demonstrated her commitment to patient care. In the mid-1980s, Murphy transitioned to school nursing and served at Tumbleweed Elementary and Desert Foothills Junior High in the Washington Elementary District, impacting the health and well-being of numerous students.

Murphy’s personal life was equally rich. She met her husband, Ed Murphy, in a youth group at Trinity First United Methodist Church in 1964, and they married on July 31, 1971. Recently, the couple celebrated 54 years of marriage. Together, they raised three daughters: Cristin St. John, Shannon Mandadi, who is married to Venu, and Megan Foster-De Oro, who is married to Thomas. Murphy was also a proud grandmother to four grandchildren: Nyssa and Armän Foster-De Oro, and Ethan and Emma Mandadi.

Known for her incredible kindness and giving nature, Murphy frequently extended her compassion beyond family and friends. Despite facing multiple medical challenges since 2017, she remained a positive presence for her loved ones, embodying the virtues of nursing, love, and care throughout her life.
